Kaunas Artists‘ House and the community of V. Putvinskio street continue the year-old tradition that has gathered the citizens of Kaunas and its guests to this historical part of the city – the “Putvinskio Street Day”. This year the event will took place on the last Saturday of spring – the 26th May.
The core of “Putvinskio Street Day” is the encouragement of neighbourly and communal relationships, inviting the city’s communities for an honest conversation: throughout the entire day of the event, everyone will find a little something for themselves in the programme. The participants of this year’s event were invited to enjoy a wide range of cultural and educational activities, taking place in a variety of places across the street: its slopes, public gardens, unique buildings and their courtyards, and of course, in the street itself. The participants were invited to explore the history of V. Putvinskio street, listen to the stories of its inhabitants and get involved in a rich programme prepared both by the community of the street and the artists, cultural operators and initiatives from the city. A part of this year’s “Putvinskio Street Day” programme was selected through an open call, which collected suggestions from the city’s communities and various other initiatives.
This year the one day festival featured lectures by professors Liudas Mažylis and Gintautas Mažeikis, a variety of tours that explored the unique story of both the street and its inhabitants, a one day exhibition in a modernist building stairwell, performances by “Parranda Polar”, “Unit5”, “MP Origins” and Arvydas Joffė jazz quartet “2+2”, creative workshops, a programme of performance art and a variety of other activities.
In the first installment of the one day festival in 2017, V. Putvinskio street was separated into 3 zones – art, science and Levinas’s – in which over 20 different events took places: portrait, second-hand design object, film, bike repair workshops, origami art lessons, fitness and lifestyle activities, excursions, film screenings, discussions on city philosophy and V. Putvinskio street vision, Henry Parland readings, exhibitions, meetings between neighbours, performances by “Arklio Galia” and “Candee Train” amongst many others.
