Archive: a selection of Lithuanian interwar archive film
This selection of archival interwar cinema shows Kaunas: its streets, hillsides, rivers, buildings, cars (will you notice the “konkė”, speeding along Laisvės Avenue?), and most importantly – people. They are slowly walking around the garden of the Musical theatre, bringing water from Nemunas, hurry past the central post, laugh from jokes only they know… The archival reels revive both historical figures and ordinary people, mingling in the crowd of Laisvės avenue.

Prof. Liudas Mažylis family stories (the event will take place in Lithuanian and is presented in collaboration with Vytautas Magnus University)

This conversation will feature professor Liudas Mažylis’s family stories – the famed historian will share the story of how his family came to settle in V. Putvinskio street and also showcase numerous images from the family archive. According to L. Mažylis, his grandfather, “Pranas Mažylis, who was a medic, had an amazing sense of investment. He invested in lives that were about to be born and also into property, which happened to be on Putvinskio street. Here he built a building, his life’s dream: a private hospital. After that he saved the lives of those who were already born – he saved those who were in peril. And all of this happened in her, in Putvinskio street.”

The idea of this talk is to expand the vision of “the devils”, “Lucifer” and Satan in connection with the collection of Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, the activities of the Kaunas’s Devils’ Museum and Czesław Miłosz’s notions in “The Land of Ulro”. Miłosz’s vision of Hell on Earth was inspired by Adam Mickiewicz’s “Dziady” and the romantic visions of William Blake. The talk will discuss the trickster-like folk descriptions of encounters with the Devils, its carnival functions and the romantic images of Lucifer, the Angel of Light. The talk will also include a discussion of the very contradictory interpretations of satanism in contemporary Hardcore subcultures.
