On Saturday, 30 June, 11 am – 4.30 pm Kaunas Artists’ House is pleased to invite adults and children alike to a truly musical Saturday – the playing and making musical instruments from the ethnic world workshop run by Hannes Heyne (Germany).

Hannes Heyne views music as an essential part of being in the world. He is a dipl hydrologist, sound researcher and instrument maker who develops methods to experience elementary music as basic food for humans, works in the field of musical ecology, interdisciplinary teaching music, science, art and intercultural understanding, international projects, festivals, camps, soundobjects. H. Heyne is also the founder of the KlangHütte project in Dresden, Germany.
11 am – 12.30 am Part 1: A playful introduction to special and unusual instruments
The first part of the workshop will offer a playful introduction to unique instruments of different origins like didgeridoo, bull roarer (Australia), water drum, raft-rattle, kalimba (Afrika), gopichand, anklung, bawu, lithophones (Asia), bamboo log drum, eagle love flute (America) and many others as well as self-invented ones. More than 30 instruments will be played together by a methods of sensitive exploring, gaming ideas and improvisation.
Additionally presented and played will be the self-to-make instruments from the afternoon workshop.
Musical pre-knowledge and experience not required. This workshop is recommended for adults and kids from 8 years. Limited availability. The cost of the workshop is 10 EUR per participant.
2 pm – 4.30 pm Part 2: Making musical instruments from different cultures
The start of the workshop will be the making of sound sticks from the branches of the trees and short after finishing them to play them in different way: juggling, throwing, balancing, theatre, fantasy game, rhythms. Further on people can choose according to age and ability from making: insect voice, bull roarer, twittering roll, humming plate, scraper, pan flute, ocarina, stirring xylophone, kazoo, shaker, rattles and others. All instruments, either by wood or bamboo, have a strong connection to nature- either through their material or sound. This is a practice of acoustic ecology and the self-made sounders will be played together in a small eco-concert.
