After a year-long break, the more than a decade old festival “Centras” was reformed in 2017 as a curated international artistic residency.

This year’s concept draws from the long-standing title of the festival – “Centras” (Lithuanian for “Center”) – which allowed to open a set of broadly-defined topics: INSTITUTION (Lehman Brothers), PERIPHERY (Monika Janulevičiūtė and Antanas Lučiūnas), SYNAPSE (Eglė Kulbokaitė and Dorota Gawęda). The research points, proposed by the residency program’s curator Vaida Stepanovaitė, are closely linked to the changing cultural landscape of Kaunas and reflect the need to rethink different methods of researching and experiencing contemporaneity. The international artists’ residency “Centras” relies on artistic and curatorial research carried out in the local context of Kaunas and Lithuania and is looking for peripheral and parallel connections. Artists’ groups are choosing their own strategies and ways to access the proposed themes, dissecting and unwrapping them in different forms of exhibitions and educational programs at Kaunas Artists’ House.

The project is partially financed by Kaunas City Municipality.

The international residency “Centras” and its accompanying events took place at Kaunas Artists’ House on 22 June, 22 August and 13 October – 3 November, 2017. More information about the residency:
