Mocuments // “Under a Placid Sky”

2021-10-28/19:00 - 21:30

The Kaunas Artists’ House programme “Mocuments” – a project for the dissemination of video art and films analysing the construction of different realities – invites to the closing of the second films screenings cycle “Personal as Historical”.

The second cycle of “Mocuments” is intended to delve into the relationship between personal history, narrative, and archive, when the spontaneous personal action of documenting becomes a historical document.

On October 28, the film “Under a Placid Sky” (2018) by Polish artist Anna Konik will end this year’s “Mocuments” programme. The screening will also feature the artist herself, who will present the film and participate in the discussion. The film attempts to link the stories and experiences of Jews, repatriates from the eastern Polish border, and the German minority in a small town called Dobrodzień, in southern Poland between Czestochowa and Opole. The main character in the film is the artist’s mother, who suffers from senile dementia. She is the starting point of the film as the artist further explores the discrepancies between the town’s individual and collective memory.

What are those preserved memories of the town of Dobrodzień and its inhabitants? Why and how some memories are forgotten? These questions will be discussed live with the artist herself.

Movie screening is FREE. The possibility pass is required and registration to the event is needed.

The “Mocuments” project is part of the extended program “Unlearning Eastern Europe”. This project aims to rethink the problems specific to the Eastern European region, from the traumas of the historical past, the possibilities of decolonization to the strategies of memory politics or activism.

The project is funded by the Lithuanian Film Center.
