FLUXUS FESTIVAL

Fluxus is a desire for constant movement, elevation and change: from temporality to contemporaneity, from the center to non-center, from the everyday to unexpectedness.

During the Fluxus Festival, which has been taking place since 2018, the celebration of community, co-creation, and the transformation of this day into a true gathering of the residents of Kaunas city and district, expressing friendship and creativity, is encouraged. Participants of the event are invited to ascend the Parodos Hill, one of the busiest streets in Kaunas, in unexpected ways inspired by the Fluxus movement, through costumes, experimentation, and the utilization of creativity. The street is closed to traffic during the festival night, becoming open for the participants' self-expression. The ascent to the hill starts at Jurgis Mačiūnas Square, the birthplace of the Fluxus movement, and upon reaching the top, the participants engage in an (un)expected and (un)ordinary artistic communal action created by the communities of Kaunas city and district, as well as professional artists.

During the Fluxus Festival, significant attention is given to the discovery of synergy between professional and community-based contemporary art performances, the decentralization of culture, the dissemination of Fluxus principles, and the inclusion of various groups of residents. Interest in the event grows every year: in 2018 - 350 visitors; in 2019 - 1500 visitors; in 2020 (with quarantine restrictions) - 800 visitors; in 2021 - 2000 visitors; in 2022 - over 7500 visitors.

From 2018 to 2022, the Fluxus Festival was born and grew as part of the Fluxus Labas! program of the "Kaunas - European Capital of Culture 2022" project. After the end of the title year, the goal of continuing to spread Fluxus and the ideas of community remains, so it is pleasing that starting from 2023, the event continues its life together with the Public Institution "Kaunas Artists' House".

It is hoped that this will allow for the exploration of deeper connections between the communities and artists of Kaunas, undiscovered ways for Fluxus to spread in the life of every Kaunas resident. The Fluxus Festival will continue to be an integral part of Kaunas' cultural life!
