If the four walls of your house drive you crazy, and you can't relax or find inspiration in sterile co-working spaces or overcrowded libraries, visit the reading room of the Kaunas Artists' House - a great place to work on a personal computer or hold small meetings.
We don't have specific working areas, so you can sit wherever you want, even on the sofa! We have fast wireless internet connection, coffee, tea, and the Kaunas artists' collective will always be ready to assist you. The most important thing is that EVERYTHING IS FREE. It is not only you we will be waiting for - your pet is also welcome in the reading room!
In addition to a comfortable place to work and create, you will find a rich and unique collection of publications that cannot be found in Kaunas public libraries. Our collection includes cultural theory, criticism and art history books, periodical culture and art magazines, catalogs of various exhibitions, monographs of artists and books created by them. We invite you to take a look at the catalog of publications below.
All publications can be read not only on the spot but also borrowed for a period of two weeks. Read more about the terms and conditions of borrowing publications below.
Every reader living or residing in the city and/or district of Kaunas can borrow the library's publications (up to 2 units) for one to two weeks. Periodicals in the reading room are also lent to the reader.
The reader can borrow publications during the working hours of Kaunas Artists' Reading Room (from Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The reader can choose publications from the KAH online catalog of publications and reserve them in advance by email to [email protected] or by visiting the reading room in person.
In order to borrow a publication to home, the reader must contact the KAH employee:
- Provide a valid personal identification document;
- Leave a one-time deposit of €10;
- Sign these rules for borrowing publications of the Kaunas Artists' House Reading Room.
Returning the publication
Borrowed publications can be returned directly to the KAH employee during the working hours of the Kaunas Artists' House reading room.
Borrowed publications must be returned on time. After the end of the term of use and if it is not extended, other publications are not loaned to the reader. If the publication is delayed for 1 month, the 10 Euro deposit is not returned to the reader. A reader who has lost or irreparably damaged a KAH reading room publication must replace it with the same one or pay a sum of money corresponding to the value of the publication.
Extension of the return period
The deadline for returning a loaned publication can be extended if the publication was loaned for one or two weeks and if its return is not delayed.
Limit on extensions of the return period - the term of the borrowed publication can be extended only once for one to two weeks.
Readers can extend the deadline for returning the publication by writing an e-mail to [email protected] or by calling +370 664 22939 during working hours.
To check the return date of borrowed publications, contact by e-mail [email protected]
If you are more interested in the art and theory of music and sound, the mediatheque curated by the industrial culture platform MATTERS awaits you in the reading room.
On the shelves of the mediatheque you will find sound publications created and/or published by Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian sound artists, which can be classified as experiments of non-European tradition, publications about drone, noise, sound politics, listening, composing, silence, etc. In addition, a couple of players (CD + cassettes and vinyl records) and headphones are waiting for those who want to settle in the quiet reading room and listen to the selection offered by MATTERS or listen to the cassettes / vinyl records / CDs you brought with you (we know how quickly needles break and how unexpectedly it happens that the player no longer spins the cassette). The current selection has been put together by the amazing passionate people at Syrphe, Dangus, STURM, Ghia, Tapekiosk, Anagram Books Distribution and Six chairs books. Audio recordings with descriptions can be found in the library catalog.
In addition, lectures, educational activities, workshops, presentations and other events are organised in the reading room of the Kaunas Artists' House.
