For its fifth (anniversary!) season, the beloved documentary film cycle COMMON PEOPLE, embraced by both Kaunas residents and city visitors, is inviting to indulge in an array of films. These films include both famous classics from documentary history and modern ones that expand the genre's limits.

On the 11th of October at 7 pm, we invite you to a screening of Barbet Schroeder’s film “General Idi Amin Dada” at Kaunas Artists' House.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM:

The first in-depth film study of the former Uganda dictator. Despite the numerous disturbing facts reeled in this film, Idi Amin personally approved its release (perhaps believing that nothing could possibly threaten his self-proclaimed position of president for life). Although he has since been toppled from power, this unique and vivid self-portrait remains a valuable and fascinating record of the gregarious madman who made headlines in the 70s.

Dir. Barbet Schroeder

Documentary, France, Switzerland, 1974. English, Swahili, French with English and Lithuanian subtitles, 92 min.

THE SCREENING IS FREE OF CHARGE.

The "COMMON PEOPLE" screening series aims to discuss not only the content of documentary films but also the whole notion of documentary cinema. The series addresses questions of ethics and directorial decisions. To film or not to film? When does a director cross the line of closeness with their subject? Should documentary cinema reflect ‘reality’ or the vision of its creator? These questions and others are raised and discussed by looking at films that maintain a close look at people telling their own stories: sensitive, creative, eccentric, and based somewhere in the margins.

The project is curated by Karolis Žukas (Kitas Kinas) and Edvinas Grinkevičius (Kaunas Artists' House).

The project is financed by the Lithuanian Film Center and organized by Kaunas Artists' House.
