PUTVINSKIS STREET DAY | Other Side of the Street
This year, the growing cultural street festival “Putvinskis Street Day” invites you to a creative and musical bustle!
This year, we're challenging the saying “the grass is greener on the other side”. Is the grass really greener on the other side? Or is it very different on the other side? What separates us from the other - a fence, a path, a street, a city, a national border? Can we unite the different sides of the street?
On the last Sunday of May, from 2 pm, V. Putvinskis Street, sidewalks and courtyards will be united by creative workshops for the whole family - guided tours, unseen spaces of the street's establishments will be opened, and the asphalt and the tiles will become a stage for one afternoon. In the evening, at 5 pm, we will open the new amphitheater in the courtyard of Kaunas Artists' House with a concert by three bands!
-
Activities will be held in Lithuanian.
Organised by: Kaunas Artists' House
Financed by: Kaunas City Municipality
PROGRAM
- V. Putvinskis Day at P. Mažylis Maternity Home
13:30 – 15:00 | P. Mažylis Maternity Home
Drawings on the asphalt “From HERE to the World”. P. Mažylis Maternity Home – the starting point of the journey to the world for many generations. Let's all draw together, both big and small, the journey from V. Putvinskis Street to the world, to see if the grass is truly greener THERE...
- Creative Workshop “Bags for Your Items”
14:00 – 16:00 | A. Žmuidzinavičius Creations and Collections Museum Garden
We know you have many items, and your items have many unruly legs. We have a solution for you! We invite you to the garden of artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, where we will decorate canvas bags and create your own designed bag for your items. Perhaps, inspired, you will decide to adorn your bag with a favorite quote, poem verse, or haiku, as we must not forget that our neighbors, the long-time organizers of Putvinskis Street Days, master the word skillfully, and we still hope that “Slemo Ragučiai” will visit the green Antanas Žmuidzinavičius garden!
Attention! In case of bad weather, the creative workshops will be held in the museum lobby.
- Stained Glass Creative Workshop
14:00 – 17:00 | E. Levin Center
A creative education inspired by the uniqueness of Putvinskis Street, its architecture, and the neighborhood across the street – the Čiurlionis Museum. We will create stained glass pieces inspired by the Art Deco fragments of Kaunas and Putvinskis Street architecture. The artworks will be miniature stained glass or mosaics inspired by architectural fragments found on this street.
- Collective Manicure Workshop “Listening to the Palm”
14:00 – 17:00 | R. Antinis Square
What do you think your grandparents and great-grandparents think while looking out the window at the vast horizon? What experiences shaped their contemplative gaze? Perhaps a shadow of guilt visits your mind, urging you to remember the last time you called your grandmother? Or maybe you lack the time and will to better understand your roots, annoyed by the arguments and disputes sparked by generational differences? We invite you to pause the fast pace of life for a moment and join a collective manicure session. Bring your elders along and dedicate a few hours to the careful “archaeology” of hands, during which you can explore hands adorned with a rich past and find celebration in conflicts.
- Creative Linocut Workshop
14:00 – 17:00 | M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum Lawn
We invite you to a linocut workshop! Together we will create a communal neighborhood map – let’s see old places anew by engraving locations from our residential or favorite neighborhoods onto a piece of linoleum. The artworks of all workshop participants will be printed on a large map of Kaunas neighborhoods, revealing the soul of each micro-district. The activity is suitable for everyone, but children under 6 should be supervised by parents. Let’s try to fill the map with our unique stories.
- Creative Workshop “Green Senses”
14:00 – 17:00 | E. Levin Center
In these interactive interdisciplinary workshops, the author invites participants to explore the senses – to experience green through smell and touch. Participants will mold clay and play with green scent notes, discussing the green zones of Putvinskis Street, past and present. The workshop is suitable for participants of all age groups.
- Guerrilla Gardening Workshop “Between the Paving Stones”
14:00 – 17:00 | R. Antinis Square
If you haven’t awakened your inner child for a while, you will have the opportunity to do so at Agata and Marijonas' guerrilla gardening workshop “Between the Paving Stones”. Guerrilla gardening is an initiative by urbanists tired of the greyness and dullness, encouraging everyone to break boundaries and actively contribute to enriching the city's greenery. With Agata, we will mold seed bombs that burst with life when thrown, and with Marijonas, we will make slingshots to ensure the seeds travel far! Let’s blur the boundaries and encourage nature together!

- Performance “Wallenberg Caramels”
14:00 – 17:00 | Throughout V. Putvinskis Street
Swedish artist Mattias Hellberg, dressed in the costume of the Wallenberg family, will invite participants of Putvinskis Street Day to sweetly and ironically contemplate a serious topic – Swedish financial imperialism in Lithuania. “The Wallenberg family is one of the richest Swedish capitalists, owning almost 50% of the Swedish stock market. This family also controls SEB Bank, the largest bank in Lithuania, and is the most prominent symbol of current Swedish financial imperialism”, says the artist. During the performance, the artist hands out caramel candies named after a psychiatric hospital in Sweden, linking the historical use of these candies in unethical patient studies to Sweden's imperial ambitions in the Baltic States.
- Performative Intervention “Ripples” by Samuels Ozolins
14:00 – 17:0 | Throughout V. Putvinskis Street
An interactive and playful performative action moving along Putvinskis Street from one end to the other, back and forth. This action is based on a simple movement exercise – mimicking. The artist usually creates relationships with “non-dancing” objects such as the sun or the natural environment in his performances. During Putvinskis Street Day, this performative action will involve dancing with the entire street and all its elements – buildings, greenery, sidewalks, and, of course, people. The artist invites you to join and rhetorically asks – perhaps this movement performance can become a duet?
- Presentation of Dance Performance Sketch by 3rd Year Students of LMTA Dance and Movement Department
15:30 | Foot of the “Pompeii” (aka “Šilelis”) Stairs
The world is closing in
And did you ever think
That we could be so close like brothers?
The future's in the air,
I can feel it everywhere
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away - The Scorpions
Rave and Riot, harmoniously complementary social environments where authentic individuality – the feeling of “I am - I” – transforms into unity. Through mutually embodied behavior, individual existence enters a collective zone where one becomes part of the whole.
We are thrown into freedom. Sentenced to freedom. We can choose freely, but we cannot choose not to choose. We unanimously understand that our existence in the rave is based on free choice. Can we argue that existence in riot is also a free choice, not a psychological and social inevitability? Both of these social phenomena are unequivocally united by a collective desire for liberation. To sweat, move rhythmically, direct our bodies in one direction. To expand, shout, chant, and scream. To repetitively echo the beats of hearts, drums, bass, and breaking glass.
With this performance, the creator Agnietė Lisičkinaitė continues her characteristic exploration of how to embody protest through means of scenic expression. Together with the 3rd-year students specializing in contemporary dance at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, she aims to create an uninterrupted collective journey of movement towards liberation.

- VOLT&VIBE | Last 2 Brain Cells | Contemporary Electroacoustic and Experimental Electronic Music Concert Series
14:30 | BLC rooftop terrace (entrance B1)
Last 2 Brain Cells is a duo consisting of Matas Samulionis and Klaudija Indriliūnaitė. How many cells are in the last brain cells? Are they two separate cells? Or are they living cell communities full of cells? It sounds similar to drumsticks, but the group has no percussion. A performance that won't overload your brain, intended to warm up the audience for composer and comedian Arma Agharta. Although this is our audience. You are our audience. Constantly changing and always the same harmonies, mostly encouraging you to lose track of time, an electroacoustic (junk, not a word) experiential (the same) performance. Improvised improvisation with improvised improvisation tools. Here is what awaits. What will be, no one knows yet.
