On the 22nd of February at 18:30, Kaunas Artists’ House will host a two-act evening of Ukrainian performing art in order to commemorate the second anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and nearly 10 years of Ukrainian resistance to Russian occupying forces.

During the first part, dancer and choreographer Anton Ovchinnikov (Ukraine / Lithuania) will present “Beauty Of The Beast” – a live performance that offers an alternative vision of what a traditional classical ballet class might look like in Russia, the country where the entire cultural industry works to support the military-industrial complex and is subject to state ideology and propaganda.

The second act is a selection of 10 Ukrainian contemporary dance short films created in response to the Russian full-scale invasion. The program titled “Moving in Mayhem” encapsulates numerous artistic reflections on the feelings and changes brought by the escalation. Some films deal with the tanks becoming part of the cityscape and birthdays celebrated in the bomb shelters. Others take on a more metaphorical approach, addressing the sense of uncertainty and hope present in the air.

The event is created as a space for conversation about the current Ukrainian realities, and an act of collective remembrance of the continuous Ukrainian resistance to the occupying Russian forces.
