COMMON PEOPLE
Since 2019, the series of documentary film screenings "Common People," initiated by the Kaunas Artists' House and the platform "Kitas Kinas," aims to present unique documentaries that tell the stories of various communities or (sub)cultures, ranging from underprivileged groups in society to portraits of cult figures in the history of art and culture.
During the presentations accompanying the cycle, discussions are encouraged not only about the content of the films and social issues but also about the phenomenon of documentary cinema in general. Film screenings and accompanying discussions raise questions related to the ethics of documentary filmmaking and directorial decisions. To film or not to film? When does the director cross the line of intimacy with their subject? Should a documentary faithfully represent reality, or should it reflect the creator's vision? These topics are discussed and explored when examining films at the center of which are people telling their own stories: sensitive, not always conforming, creative, and eccentric.
